Matowi Tile – Swallowtail in Turquoise
This tile is inspired by French artist E.A. Seguy’s work. It was very influential throughout the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. He found inspiration in nature, and his fascination with butterflies culminated in his 1920s porfolio, Papillons. For his butterflies, Seguy created exacting replications in vivid colors using the pochoir stenciling method, in which each plate was hand-colored using as many as twenty stencils.
Motawi Tileworks is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan where they design and make all of their ceramic tiles by hand. They can be hung on the wall, displayed on a stand, or used as the focal point in your next tile project.
